The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes the steps taken by the Competition Commission regarding Premier Foods’ intended closure of its fruit processing plant in Tulbagh.
The Commission has officially filed an application with the Competition Tribunal to reconsider the approval of Premier’s takeover of Rhodes Food Group, after concern arose that the enterprise may possibly not have complied with the conditions of the transaction.
It is alleged that alternative agreements have already been concluded with some employees – which may also possibly be in conflict with initial agreements.
The Freedom Front Plus had formally approached the Commission about the intended closure, and will continue to bring the interests of the affected producers, employees and the wider Tulbagh community to the relevant role players’ attention.
The party believes that sustainable solutions should be found that not only protect job opportunities, but also ensure that fruit producers retain access to fair markets and competitive prices.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep an eye on the process, and keep the pressure on until Tulbagh’s producers and employees’ concerns are addressed and their interests safeguarded.
