Freedom Front Plus supports SOPOA’s legal action against City of Cape Town

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) wholeheartedly supports the legal action taken by SAPOA (The South African Property Owners Association) against the City of Cape Town for excessive tariff hikes.

SOPOA filed an urgent application with the Western Cape High Court to review and set aside three tariffs implemented by the City of Cape Town on 1 July 2025.

These tariffs include a cleaning charge as well as fixed water and sanitation charges, which are all linked to the value of the respective property.

The Freedom Front Plus opposed these tariffs from the outset, warning that they are unbalanced and unfair.

The party foresaw the negative financial impact these tariffs would have on households and businesses, adding that the City of Cape Town’s decision to implement them disregards the economic struggles of its residents.

The Freedom Front Plus voted against the budget.

The City’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, argues that these tariffs are a fair way to make wealthy property owners contribute to infrastructure costs. However, this argument does not hold water, as it has the greatest impact on small property owners and vulnerable individuals, potentially leading to forced property sales.

The Freedom Front Plus will support all efforts to reverse these tariff hikes and compel the City of Cape Town to implement fair, transparent and sustainable tariffs that serve the best interests of its residents.
