Pensioners residing in the Ekurhuleni Metro area must apply to the Metro for discount on their property tax before the commencement of the new financial year on 1 July 2023.
Pensioners who applied for this discount in the past must re-apply for it seeing as the concession is only valid for a year.
Persons older than the age of sixty qualify for this discount on property tax.
There are two types of discounts for which pensioners can apply.
In the first instance, a discount of R150 000 is granted through a reduction in the property’s assessment value. So, R150 000 of a pensioner’s property is exempted from property tax.
In the second instance, a further discount is calculated based on the pensioner’s monthly income.
The relevant application form together with an affidavit, a certified copy of the person’s identity document as well as a tax certificate or proof of income must be submitted to one of the Metro’s service centres.
The FF Plus encourages all residents who qualify to apply for the discount at once to avoid being surprised by a much higher municipal bill.
