The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands that the Ekurhuleni Metro urgently intervene in the severe sewage pollution crisis at the Boksburg Lake – right next to the Boksburg Library.
What was once a peaceful, green public space has now turned into a toxic cesspool where raw sewage flows freely, causing a terrible stench that makes working conditions in the Library unbearable.
Staff describe the situation as intolerable, as the smell spreads throughout the entire building and makes breathing difficult.
Despite numerous reports to the Library’s management, unions and the Occupational Health Department, the Metro has not taken any steps or conducted an investigation.
Ekurhuleni’s dereliction is endangering the lives and health of municipal staff and residents.
Photos taken this week clearly show sewage deposits and waste water spilling into the stream next to the Library – a sure sign of long-term infrastructure decay and lack of maintenance.
The party has reported the matter to the acting City Manager, Kagiso Lerutla, the Head of Water and Sanitation, Thokozani Maseko, as well as the Department of Health and Social Development.
The Freedom Front Plus demands immediate action by engineers and environmental health officers to resolve the problem.
This is not just about a burst sewer pipe; it is about an entire system that is collapsing. Public institutions such as libraries should be safe spaces, not health hazards.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep the pressure on the Metro, and will not hesitate to escalate the matter to the national Department of Water and Sanitation and the provincial Department of Environmental Affairs.
When a metro fails to ensure the dignity of its own workers and the safety of public spaces, it is not just an embarrassment, it is an absolute disgrace.
