The Emfuleni Local Municipality’s procurement of two brand-new fire engines will alleviate the pressure on neighbourhood watches that have to fight fires during the winter months using mobile water tanks.
A similar fire engine that was procured last year is currently being serviced by the manufacturer, but is being retained because the service costs have not yet been paid.
Emfuleni, which serves Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging, inaugurated the two Mercedes fire engines last week during an official ceremony led by the Mayor, Mr Sipho Radebe, and the Mayoral Committee Member for Public Safety, Mr Ellias Mokoena.
Although the FF Plus welcomes the procurement of the fire engines, it does fear that Emfuleni will not be able to foot the bill. The two fire engines cost R6,2 million each.
It will also be tragic of the fire engines are unable to put out fires due to Rand Water’s limited water pressure to Emfuleni.
The Municipality’s financial position deteriorated drastically nine months ago when Rand Water attached the council’s bank account.
The FF Plus hopes that the Emfuleni Municipality will come up with the funds to pay for the fire engines. The FF Plus will keep a close eye on the matter.
