The recent claim by the Mayor of the Tshwane Metro, Dr Nasiphi Moya, that there are only five potholes in the Metro that still need to be repaired is either a reflection of her ignorance or a deliberate attempt at deception.
This week, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) completed a mere 4,5 km route through Jakaranda, Galway, Blackwood and Jim van der Merwe Streets in Centurion and counted 32 potholes.
The party is inundated with complaints from furious residents about the poor condition of roads, which damage vehicles and cause accidents.
The Metro blames heavy rain and a backlog in repairs, but there have been weeks without rain where no progress was made with repair work.
The Freedom Front Plus wants to challenge the Mayor to, just for a little while, drive her own official vehicle so that she can experience what residents do firsthand.
The party demands that the Department of Roads conduct a transparent, independent survey of the Metro’s roads, thoroughly inform the Mayor of what a pothole is, and come up with a credible plan with timelines to address the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus encourages residents to file claims against the Metro for any vehicular damage or losses incurred as a result of the Metro’s negligence and failure in this regard.
Keeping motorists safe on the Metro’s roads is vital, so, the Metro has to pull up its socks.
