The success of a democracy comes from the heart

What enables a democracy such as South Africa to succeed or fail is not the hard and rigid prescripts and rules as contained in the Constitution and other legislation, but that which is in the hearts and minds of the people of the country, Dr. Corné Mulder, the chief whip of the FF Plus said.

Dr. Mulder, during the debate on the twentieth anniversary of South Africa’s Constitution and human rights, quoted the book, ‘Africa in Search of Democracy’ of Professor A.K. Busia from Ghana, and said that the guidelines in this book can be taken to heart by the people of South Africa.

“His message is that the unwritten rules are that which could make a success of democracy, and not guidelines and prescripts.

“He wrote that honesty, integrity, self-assertion, and a respect for democratic processes are the most important. That which comes from people’s hearts. We desperately need that in South Africa,” Dr. Mulder said.

He also said that the Freedom Charter clearly states that all national groups shall have equal rights and equal status in the bodies of state.

“These groups are a reality of South Africa which cannot be wished away, and it is perhaps part of the problem why there is currently no social harmony in the country, according to Dr. Mulder.
