Stoffberg subway in Brakpan a crisis warranting immediate attention

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in Brakpan demands immediate and decisive action from the Ekurhuleni Metro Council to address the dangerous decay of the Stoffberg subway.

The demand follows the umpteenth closure of the subway after storm water flooded it at the weekend.

Even though the Metro Council has received many complaints and warnings, calls for the road to be repaired and drainage to be improved fall on deaf ears.

No action is taken, despite last year’s fatal accident at the subway, which was partly caused by floodwater.

Last weekend’s heavy rain exacerbated the situation; the condition of the subway is no longer just an inconvenience – it poses a direct danger to the safety of everyone using it.

Residents deserve better than the quick fix of closing the subway every time it rains. They deserve a permanent solution and full accountability from the authorities.

The Freedom Front Plus not only reported the potholes and crumbling road surface to the Department of Roads and Storm Water, but also demanded a thorough engineering report detailing why storm water from all directions flows towards the subway. The Metro’s drainage systems should be regularly cleaned and maintained to prevent future flooding.

The Freedom Front Plus refuses to be content with vague responses and more delays.

The risk increases with every storm, but the Metro Council expects residents to remain patient while exposed to needless danger. It is time for clear feedback, concrete timelines and accountable leadership.
