The FF Plus insisted during a council meeting of the Ekurhuleni Metro Council that service delivery in the Metro should happen faster and not slower, as determined by the newly proposed turnaround times.
The party refused to support the new turnaround times for addressing service delivery problems that the Metro intends to implement, and insisted that the matter be referred to the Metro’s respective committees for resolution.
The proposed timeline for investigating a sinkhole after it formed and was reported has been extended to 30 days. Sinkholes are extremely dangerous and could lead to injuries, damages claims and even the loss of lives.
Some of the other turnaround times between reporting and investigation that the Metro wants to adjust include, among others, the following:
• Water leakages from one day to two days.
• Illegal water connections from one day to five days.
• Faulty power meters from five days to 15 days.
• Power meters that may have been tampered with from one day to 15 days.
• Repairing a power outage at a residential unit from one day to seven days.
According to the Metro, officials now also have ten days to respond to disturbance of the peace complaints and no longer need to respond at once, as per the current prescription.
On the FF Plus’s insistence, the respective oversight committees will now be given the opportunity to consider the proposed turnaround times for all service delivery standards and submit comments.
The party understands that the Metro is currently experiencing a shortage of personnel and equipment, but residents are still paying for service delivery, so, the Metro cannot drag its feet in addressing problems.
The FF Plus will keep fighting for residents’ right to proper and effective service delivery.
