Selebano will not get away without being prosecuted

When it was announced earlier today that the suspended head of the Gauteng Health Department Mr Barney Selebano resigned, the FF Plus made it very clear that Mr Selebano will not get away without being prosecuted, says Philip van Staden, FF Plus MPL in the Gauteng Legislature.

“After the conclusion of the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearings, Mr Selebano will be called to account for the deaths of the psychiatric patients. The FF Plus wants to make it very clear that Mr Selebano will not get off scot-free for the part he played in the Esidimeni tragedy.

“During the arbitration hearings, Mr Selebano took accountability for the tragedy that occurred on his watch. He also said that if such a tragedy occurs under your leadership, there is no way that you can just walk away from it. But that is exactly what he has just done. He should follow his own advice.

“The FF Plus is of the opinion that the Gauteng Premier, Mr David Makhura, must not accept Mr Selebano’s resignation as that will make it look like he also wants to cover up the whole unsavoury business.

“The Premier has the power to appoint the head of the Department and to accept a resignation or not. If he accepts Mr Selebano’s resignation, the Premier is an accessory to the cover up and that opens him up to prosecution.

“The FF Plus smells a rat and the party will not rest until everyone that was involved in the tragedy has been called to account.

“The FF Plus will lay a charge with the relevant authorities when the arbitration hearings have been concluded,” says Van Staden.
