The security company responsible for guarding libraries in the Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift) must be held accountable for the recent break-ins at the libraries in this Municipality.
During a meeting of the Municipality's Arts and Culture Portfolio Committee, where a report on the break-ins was tabled, the FF Plus asked that the security video footage must be examined to determine who the culprits are.
The libraries are guarded 24 hours a day, but the Muldersdrift library was broken into on 6 August and again on 1 September while a security guard was on duty.
The air conditioner's copper cables were stolen, but no complaint was lodged with the police seeing as the security guard was the only person on the premises.
On 1 September at 21:50, a security guard indicated that the front door of the Krugersdorp library had been breached. Four computers and a scanner were stolen.
As one of the Municipality's coalition partners, the FF Plus will not approve the current security company's application to act as a service provider for the Municipality on a permanent basis.
Public libraries play an important role in the provision of safe, accessible and free educational resource centres for Mogale City residents and must be cherished and protected, not looted.
