The West Rand District Municipality’s announcement that the June salaries of senior managers and councillors will be delayed due to cash flow problems is a clear sign of a severe financial crisis.
According to a letter from the acting municipal manager, Zeblon Mphuphuli, June salaries will only be paid out by 5 July.
When a municipality cannot even pay its own employees on time, it demonstrates that local government in Gauteng is on a dangerous path of mismanagement and decay.
This delay does not only have administrative consequences, but creates direct and unfair repercussions for the affected employees and their households.
Contractual obligations do not wait for a municipality’s cash flow problems to improve. No employee should suffer financial harm simply because a council is incapable of managing its finances.
The time for excuses is over. Communities are tired of plans and promises while service delivery deteriorates. When municipalities fail time and time again, there must be visible consequences.
Financial mismanagement can no longer be tolerated and must be decisively addressed. Accountability must be enforced so that officials and management are truly held responsible.
Provincial interventions must not merely exist on paper; they must be measurable and sustainable to make a tangible difference in the daily lives of residents.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) will continue to apply pressure to ensure that the Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) fulfils its constitutional responsibility to support, monitor, and intervene in municipalities where necessary.
Residents deserve a local government that meets its obligations, not one that fails its own people and communities.
On 4 November, residents have the opportunity to vote for the VF Plus for a local government that restores financial discipline, enforces accountability, and ensures real service delivery.
A vote for the VF Plus is a vote against mismanagement and for a West Rand that puts its people first.
