Ramaphosa is desperate to save ANC ahead of 2019 elections

The ANC President, Cyril Ramaphosa's, excessive emphasis of unity in the ANC and his honouring of former heroes of the freedom struggle are an indication of how deep the division and faction fights in the ANC run, says Dr Pieter Groenewald, leader of the FF Plus.

According to Dr Groenewald, the ANC is clearly doing everything in its power in an attempt to ensure unity and save the party ahead of the 2019 elections.

He says that it is clear that the ANC's NEC will not easily take the decision to recall President Jacob Zuma, but that they will do all they can to persuade him to voluntarily step down as president of South Africa.

"Mr Ramaphosa's reference to the economy and his remark that white people have too much ownership and that that is the reason for the economy not growing is the same rhetoric that President Zuma used when he said that white monopoly capital is to blame for the economy's poor growth rate.

Mr Ramaphosa should, however, guard against placing all the blame for the ANC's poor performance on the shoulders of white people
like President Zuma did.

"Mr Ramaphosa did indeed accurately identify various problem areas in South Africa, like corruption, state capture, poor service delivery, poor economic growth, safety and security, education of the youth and job creation.

"To prioritise these areas is surely the right approach, but the proof is in the pudding and it remains to be seen if Mr Ramaphosa will indeed be able to deliver feasible results.

"The issue of land reform and the principle of expropriation without compensation is still causing a lot of dismay and the FF Plus requests that Mr Ramaphosa must make
the ANC Top Six undertaking available, in the form of a document spelling out the details, as soon as possible so that everyone can know what the ANC's plans are in this regard.

"The FF Plus will address these matters in parliament so as to get answers from the ANC," says Dr Groenewald.
