The recall from the market of a large quantity of canned sardines of various brands by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) highlights the need for the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and the NRCS to prescribe and enforce standards.
The FF Plus welcomes the Regulator's steps and the investigation it launched into the brand Westpoint where the fish was canned, particularly because the right procedure was not followed with the recall.
Canned fish that comes into contact with oxygen can cause food poisoning and even death.
The FF Plus will monitor the investigation and any further steps so as to ensure that the prescribed standards are complied with.
