PP lodges complaint against Emfuleni for pollution of Vaal River

It seems, according to the Green Scorpions, that the Public Protector (PP) is preparing to lodge a complaint against the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) for polluting the Vaal River.

The FF Plus’s years of continued pressure to hold Emfuleni accountable for the pollution is bearing fruit.

The party lodged a complaint with the Green Scorpions about the Municipality’s ongoing violation of the National Water Act in 2020.

Its sewage system totally collapsed in 2018 because of minimal maintenance. Sewage started flowing through cemeteries, houses, yards and roads before finally ending up in the Vaal River.

After an investigation in 2021, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) declared the pollution of the Vaal River a violation of human rights.

The HRC held Emfuleni, the Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), and the national Department of Water and Sanitation responsible for the total collapse of Emfuleni’s water treatment system and the pollution of the Vaal River.

The FF Plus reported the Municipality’s incompetence, and failure to replace outdated infrastructure and perform routine maintenance in detail to the HRC. This input was included in the HRC’s report.

The party holds the former Municipal Manager, Lucky Leseane, the Executive Director of Metsi a Lekoa, Motoda Besani, and other officials responsible for the mismanagement of the Municipality.

The name of the new Municipal Manager, April Ntuli, will also be added to the list of accused.

The blatant pollution of the Vaal River poses a health risk to humans and animals.

The FF Plus hopes that the pollution of the Vaal River will now be resolved.
