The recent rains in Johannesburg did not only wash out potholes, but also fully exposed the extent of the ANC coalition government’s failed governance.
The same potholes usually reappear within a matter of weeks – a clear sign of poor workmanship and short-term patchwork that end up costing taxpayers dearly.
Rain is a natural and fairly predictable factor, and the fact that potholes keep appearing in the same places shows that the problem does not lie with the weather, but with a government that fails to prioritise planning, quality and accountability.
Quick fixes do not last and endanger the lives of residents and motorists.
The ANC coalition government’s approach wastes taxpayers’ money, while residents have to keep shelling out for vehicle damage, traffic disruptions and safety risks. Contractors are not held accountable for the durability of their work, as the Metro prioritises quantity over quality.
Proper workmanship and sustainable repair methods, including thorough preparation of damaged areas and effective sealing, are essential to prevent water seepage and ensuring that repairs last longer than a single rainy season.
The upcoming local government elections on 4 November offer residents the opportunity to put a stop to the ANC coalition’s maladministration.
Johannesburg deserves a government that has taxpayers’ interests at heart, that prioritises planning and quality repairs, and that ensures road safety regardless of the weather.
Residents should register and vote for the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) on 4 November for better service delivery.
