The FF Plus demands that the executive Mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality (Allanridge, Hennenman, Odendaalsrus, Ventersburg, Virginia and Welkom), Nkosenjani Speelman, must be held responsible for the continuous sewage pollution caused by the Municipality and that the Municipality must take decisive action.
In terms of the Municipal Structures Act, the executive Mayor is tasked with seeing to it that service delivery is sustainable.
At present, sewage is being pumped out of the broken sewage pipes into the stormwater pipes and it then flows into natural water sources. This pollution of already scarce water sources is unacceptable.
The FF Plus demanded in an official letter to Speelman that he must intervene urgently and see to it that the pollution stops. He was given five days to respond to the letter before further steps will be taken against him for the violation of the Waste Management Act.
The residents of Matjhabeng are burdened with poor service delivery under the ANC-controlled Municipality. It is unacceptable that the Municipality is not doing everything in its power to ensure that residents live in an environment that is not harmful to their health and wellbeing.
The executive Mayor must be held accountable for the total collapse of service delivery and the constant pollution of the environment by the Municipality. The FF Plus will continue to ensure that taxpayers get the services they deserve.
