(Debat in Free State Legislature)
Although the FF Plus supports any and all measures to ensure communities' safety, the party laments the controversy surrounding the metro police in the Mangaung Metro Council.
In essence, there still only exists a service level agreement between the Mangaung city manager and the head of the metro police, Israel Kgamanyane. In terms of this agreement, Kgamanyane was already appointed between July 2018 and June 2019, but Metro residents still do not feel any safer because the metro police service does not appear to be operating yet.
The unit is not visible, apart from a few cases where vehicles were used for private purposes.
In addition to this, it is alarming that Kgamanyane was appointed in 2018 already, but the implementation of the metro police was only approved in January of this year.
The Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, recently said that a metro police service must be established soon seeing as the Free State is the only province without a metro police service.
The FF Plus wants to reiterate its warning that it should not be the only reason to establish such a body.
The Free State must take the province's actual issues into consideration. In light of the recent wave of farm attacks that occurred in the Free State over the last few months, it is clear that the Department's priorities are not in line with what the people of the province need.
For years, the FF Plus has made sure that farm attacks and murders remain on the agenda and finally, the fruits are being reaped.
The party is aware of deliberate attempts to improve rural safety and once again calls on the Free State MEC to pay special and urgent attention to these acts of terrorism in the Free State.
