Party premier must heed opposition’s warnings

* NOTE to journalists: Here follow excerpts from the speech delivered by FF Plus MPL, Tammy Wessels, in the Free State Legislature during the budget vote debate of the Free State Premier.

During her first week in office, the newly-elected Free State Premier, Ms Sisi Ntombela, has shown herself to be a party premier. If she continues to squander money on luxuries and does not address the serious problems in the province, then her legacy will not be any better than her predecessor’s.

Throwing a ritzy party costing millions of rands for herself and the former Premier, Ace Magashule, is not a good start to her term of office, particularly seeing as there are serious budget deficits.

The former premier ignored the various warnings by opposition parties, like for instance their warning about the Vrede Dairy Farm project. The new premier was an MEC in his cabinet and she also deliberately ignored the alarm bells about the failing project.

It is too late now for the Free State government to say that they will fully cooperate with the Hawks’ investigation into the matter and that they condemn all forms of fraud and corruption. While cadres were enriching themselves with the Vrede Dairy Farm project, the ANC government deliberately followed an ostrich approach. And, therefore, the ANC is to blame for the hundreds of millions of rands that were stolen from the Free State coffers.

The FF Plus will keep a close watch on the new premier and call her to account so that she will not live up to the name of being a party premier. She may not follow in the footsteps of her predecessor and waste money on expensive cars, magazines and expos on service delivery instead of prioritising the needs of the people of the Free State.
