Ordinary UIF payments are delayed, but Department denies it

The FF Plus is inundated with complaints from ordinary beneficiaries of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) who usually get a monthly pay-out from the Fund due to, among other things, retrenchment, maternity leave, paternity leave etc.

The Fund is currently under immense pressure as a result of the increase in claims for the Covid-19 Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (TERS), which was implemented in reaction to the national lockdown.

According to the Department of Labour's Director-General, 37 772 claims had been processed by 21 April and nearly R 1,6 billion had been paid out to TERS beneficiaries and apparently, ordinary UIF beneficiaries have continued to receive their pay-outs as usual.

That, however, does not seem to be the case at grass-roots level. The Department indicated that beneficiaries do not have to go to labour centres and sign for continued payments as they would usually do.

Initially, ordinary beneficiaries would have received SMS’s that would have served the same function as the signatures, but now it seems that this idea has been done away with and payments are just being made.

Many beneficiaries have still not received an SMS nor their regular payment. The Department of Labour's instruction in such a case is to send a query to the e-mail address specified for the beneficiary's area or to phone the helpline on 012 337 1997 or 0800 030 007. Numerous beneficiaries, however, say that neither their e-mails nor their phone calls elicit any kind of response.‪ ‪

The FF Plus, thus, requests all such beneficiaries to send their unanswered e-mails, that have remained unanswered for a week or longer, to plus@vfplus.org.za so that we can bring it do the Department of Labour's attention. Make sure that the e-mail contains the correct information and reference number.
