NMBM’s disaster management plans must be revised

During a Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Council's (NMBM) Strategic Planning Committee meeting, the FF Plus requested that the Mayor, Retief Odendaal, must urgently revise the Metro's disaster management plans to more effectively fight fires, like the ones currently raging in the area.

Over the past few days, the NMBM area has been affected by severely hot and windy weather conditions, which fanned the flames of the devastating fires.

Special attention must be paid to the shortage of water as well as the shortage of fire engines and personnel who can respond to fires.

The FF Plus, which is part of the coalition government in the NMBM, wants to see the vacant positions at the various fire stations filled by well-trained personnel as soon as possible.

At present, most of the fire stations are understaffed and sometimes there are only five fire fighters on duty during any given shift, like in the case of the Sidwell Fire Station.

The FF Plus is also urgently calling on all NMBM residents to refrain from leaving open fires unattended or throwing cigarette butts out of car windows, and to join their local Community Policing Forums to immediately report any fires.

The FF Plus wants to thank all the fire-fighting personnel, volunteers and Gift of the Givers who are doing everything in their power to get the fires under control.
