The FF Plus was quite right to predict that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) would not be able to spend its grant allocations from the National Treasury (NT).
This prediction has come to pass and the NMBM has to repay R379 million to the NT for the 2023/24 financial year.
The Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Zolile Williams, recently emphasised that the NMBM is failing to resolve basic service delivery problems, such as repairing potholes and addressing water losses.
This is the case despite the fact that there are grants specifically earmarked for this purpose.
The FF Plus has been saying all along that the current administration lacks the ability and political will to serve the Metro’s residents.
The FF Plus is working hard to implement stringent monitoring systems in all departments to determine how much money is spent where in an effort to better manage the Metro’s budget.
The party is also campaigning for more transparency in project planning and tender processes to identify and address corruption as soon as possible.
The party will continue to remind the ANC-led local government of the importance of responsible governance and accountability to ensure that residents receive the services for which they pay.
