The mobile library in Kagiso, located in the Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift), is an accident waiting to happen.
Situated in Pillan Street, this library is propped up with iron rods and bricks, rendering the structure unstable and dangerous.
During an oversight visit by the Municipality’s Committee on Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) expressed its concerns about the safety of the library’s workers and users.
Schoolchildren, in particular, rely on the library for completing homework assignments and their safety cannot be jeopardised.
The Freedom Front Plus also questioned the location of the mobile library in Rietvlei during the oversight visit. Although this library is of a high quality and in excellent condition, it is situated right next to a health hazard as sewage is spilling into the adjacent wetland through a storm water pipe.
The stench is unbearable, and the location poses health risks to library workers and visitors.
The poor condition of the mobile library in Kagiso and the questionable location of the one in Rietvlei raise serious concerns about the municipal officials responsible for approving these projects.
The Freedom Front Plus requested the Mayoral Committee Member responsible for the Department, Cynthia Mankazana, to immediately intervene at both facilities.
Access to a decent library is not a luxury, but a vital bridge between potential and opportunity, especially for schoolchildren who do not have internet access at home.
