Mbombela towns affected by poor maintenance of mechanical infrastructure

Poor to no maintenance on mechanical water pumps is causing chaos in Hazyview, Barberton and Kanyamazane in the Mbombela Local Municipality (Mbombela/Nelspruit, Barberton, Hazyview, Kaapschehoop, Skukuza, White River, Kanyamazane).

Hazyview residents have been without water for several days now. This is the third crisis in just two years which could have been prevented if council decisions about the planning and maintenance of infrastructure were executed.

Two 290 kW water pumps were assigned to the Sabie River pump station. One pump is meant to continually pump water to Hazyview residents while the other serves as a backup in case the first pump is out of order.

The secondary pump was, however, damaged about three years ago and was never replaced. In 2022, there was a water crisis and the secondary pump was removed, but never repaired. At the time, Hazyview residents were left without water for nearly nine days.

Now the primary pump has once again broken down due to a lack of maintenance and there is no backup pump available to switch over to.

The pump stations in Barberton and Kanyamazane suffered similar fates due to poor maintenance.

A council decision specifically identified the planning and maintenance of infrastructure for this very reason and tabled a resolution on 29 June 2020.

It would have saved these three towns a lot of inconvenience. And the Municipality would have saved thousands of rand.

The FF Plus will, therefore, demand that the municipal manager, Wiseman Khumalo, must be stripped of his office seeing as he is directly responsible for ensuring that council decisions are executed.

There is ample justification for such a request. Up to date, Mbombela has 496 council decisions that have not been executed.

Mbombela residents deserve better than the incompetent ANC, which is currently governing the Municipality.
