The FF Plus lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) to investigate possible human rights violations by the Matjhabeng Local Municipality (Allanridge, Hennenman, Odendaalsrus, Ventersburg, Virginia, Welkom) where residents frequently do not have water.
According to the Auditor-General (AG), the Municipality lost as much as 76% of its water during the 2019/2020 financial year due to leakages and illegal connections. Thus, three-quarters of every litre that the Municipality buys is lost.
Meanwhile, residents are plagued by water shortages and outages.
The Municipality's water supplier, Sedibeng Water, confirmed last year that it is technically bankrupt, mainly due to Matjhabeng's outstanding debt of more than R3,6 billion.
Sedibeng Water also indicated that the maintenance work currently performed on the reservoirs in Riebeeckstad could result in extensive water shortages in various towns in the municipal area.
It is unacceptable that residents do not have access to water amid the new wave of Covid-19 and Level Four restrictions.
Thus, the HRC must investigate the ANC-headed Municipality's negligence and mismanagement.
The FF Plus is calling on Matjhabeng residents to make sure that they are correctly registered as voters so that on the 27th of October this year, they can stand up and stand with the FF Plus to send a strong message to the ANC: Poor service delivery and the decline of municipalities must come to an end.
