Makhura’s statements about e-toll are hackneyed and nothing but empty promises

The statements made by the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, about Gauteng's e-toll system yesterday in Germiston are hackneyed and boil down to empty promises.

Makhura told the media yesterday that e-toll is not part of the future in Gauteng and that another means must be found to maintain and expand the road network. According to Makhura, the ANC conference in Gauteng agreed to abolish e-toll and that a mandate to take up the matter with President Cyril Ramaphosa and the national government was issued.

Ever since 2014, the Premier has made the exact same promise about e-toll during his annual State of the Province Address, but nothing has come of it. Gauteng tax payers are sick and tired of Makhura as he takes the same stance in the media over and over, year in and year out, and then it dies a quiet death.

If Makhura was indeed serious about doing away with the e-toll system, he would have opposed the national government as premier and abolished the system. Instead, he appointed a panel in 2014 that conducted an investigation into the system at great expense and all stake holders in Gauteng had to appear before the panel.

The FF Plus wants to make it very clear that the Premier is busy playing cat-and-mouse games and that Gauteng tax payers have started to see through him. Makhura must stop making the same statements over and over without doing anything about it.

The FF Plus reaffirms its view that e-toll is illegal and not feasible and that Makhura must immediately insist that SANRAL stop sending any more accounts and summons to motorists.
