Luxury employee complex in Mbombela may cost taxpayers even more

The luxury employee complex just outside Mbombela/Nelspruit for high-ranking provincial government officials will probably cost even more.

This is because the date of completion has been postponed once again.

The employee complex, which is already costing more than R600 million, should initially have been completed in 2018. However, the date of completion was then pushed to 2020, then 2022 and then to June 2023.

The Department of Public Works has now once again pushed back the date, but is unable to provide a new expected date of completion at this time.

The tender for the construction of the main buildings was recently re-opened, which raises questions about the appointment process followed with the previous construction company.

The employee complex consists of 31 luxury homes for the premier, the speaker and members of the executive council (MECs), a large recreational area with a swimming pool and gym, office and security buildings, and a helipad.

The total floor area of the premier’s home is 980 square meters, the speaker’s house is 913 square meters and a guest house for visiting public officials covers 882 square meters.

The 12 four-bedroom houses for MECs will each take up about 596 square meters, and the 16 three-bedroom houses for the Members of the Provincial Legislature will each cover roughly 376 square meters.

Initially, the area approved for the employee complex was 15 000 square meters. It has now been adjusted to 20 000 square meters.

The FF Plus in Mpumalanga has once again sent questions to the MEC for Public Works, Mr Mandla Ndlovu, requesting clarity on the matter.

This squandering of taxpayers’ money must not be tolerated any longer.

Mpumalanga deserves better than the ANC.
