Large parts of Vanderbijlpark were without power this Easter weekend due to incompetent security guards

The FF Plus has asked the administrator of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging), Gilberto Martins, to investigate the security company responsible for guarding power substations.

This follows in incident of alleged sabotage of the Town substation, which left large parts of Vanderbijlpark without power over the Easter weekend.

Emfuleni pays the security company R6 million every month to protect buildings and substations, which were seriously vandalised in the past.

On Good Friday, a group of men reportedly told the security guards on duty that they were there to perform maintenance work on the substation, and they were granted access.

The men fled after they cut two cables and a fire broke out. Two kVA breakers and a transformer were damaged in the fire.

Taxpayers' hard-earned money must now be used to buy new equipment because the security guards failed to check whether the individuals were indeed authorised to gain access to the premises.

And residents must be satisfied with half a promise that repairs will be completed by Friday.

Poor residents and small business enterprises are unable to afford generators and are severely affected by the week-long power outage.

Several large industries have already left Emfuleni and relocated to other municipalities due to poor service delivery and dilapidated infrastructure.

The FF Plus will continue to hold the Municipality accountable for mistakes costing residents millions.
