The FF Plus condemns the chaos and looting that erupted on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality (Koster, Derby and Swartruggens) when opposing ANC factions closed main routes and damaged infrastructure.
According to sources in the community, the compilation and finalisation of the ANC's candidate lists for the upcoming municipal elections in Kgetlengrivier is the main cause of the unrest.
It is a shame that these towns are being held hostage and are plagued by the chaos and culture of lawlessness that seem to flourish among ANC supporters. These supporters’ sheer disregard for the interests of local residents and for an orderly society is evident in their conduct.
Severe damage was done to critical infrastructure, like roads, and a truck transporting groceries, among other things, was looted.
The impact on the local economy is enormous. The N4 main route to Botswana is blocked at Swartruggens as well as the R30, which links Rustenburg with other important centres in the North West.
Business activities came to a standstill and children were prevented from going to school.
This type of destructive conduct poses a serious threat to the continued sustainability of towns in the area. In fact, prospective investors are already deterred by the poor service delivery in this ANC-controlled Municipality.
In the upcoming local government elections, voters must stand up and stand with the FF Plus and use their votes to ensure that the ANC is removed from power in the Municipality.
