It is ironic that the new Speaker of Parliament's National Assembly (NA), Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who was just recently inaugurated into office by John Hlope, Judge President of the Western Cape, will have to head the process that may possibly result in Hlope being stripped of his office.
The decision by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to impeach Hlope was taken a mere week after he acted as presiding officer in Mapisa-Nquakula's election as the new Speaker of the NA.
Under the guidance of retired Judge Joop Labuschagne, Hlope was found guilty of gross misconduct in December 2020 after he had tried to unlawfully influence two of the Constitutional Court's judges in 2012 to give judgements in favour of Zuma. And that was after he tried to seize warrants for evidence of 93 000 pages containing testimony of the corruption trial.
The vote in the NA to remove Judge Hlophe from office will have to be ratified by a two-thirds majority.
The FF Plus will put pressure on the ANC to, under the leadership of Mapisa-Nqakula, vote in favour of removing Judge Hlope from his office.
