Illegal dumping turns Mogale City into rubbish heap

The illegal dumping of garden waste in the Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift) is increasing at an alarming rate.

Open fields, ditches and even sidewalks are used as informal dumping sites, posing a serious threat to public health and causing environmental degradation.

Mogale City’s bylaw restricts municipal waste removal to household refuse, while the limited operating hours and poor service delivery at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill force residents to rely on private waste removal services.

Most of these private companies are not registered with the Municipality and do not comply with the relevant regulations.

Consequently, large quantities of garden waste and tree stumps are simply dumped along roads and in public spaces.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) submitted practical proposals to address the problem to the Municipal Manager, Thabo Ndlovu, in April already.

These include:

• Designating multiple drop-off points in Mogale City where garden waste can be disposed of.

• Such areas could also be marketed as a composting facility for residents.

• These facilities will enable residents to legally dispose of waste over weekends when the Luipaardsvlei Landfill is closed.

The party also implores residents not to dump garden waste and to ensure that the service provider they use is correctly registered.

Collaboration between the Municipality and residents would curb any further environmental damage, while restoring cleanliness and dignity to neighbourhoods.
