The Grace Mugabe incident must not become a replay of the Omar Al Bashir case where she is allowed to leave the country despite having criminal charges against her, says Dr Pieter Groenewald, leader of the FF Plus.
Yesterday at the police’s parliamentary portfolio meeting, the acting Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General L.J. Mothiba, responded to a question posed by Dr Groenewald by saying that Mrs Mugabe is still in South Africa and that her ‘legal representatives’ have undertaken to have her hand herself over to the police.
“I wanted the General’s assurance that she will not leave the country. It is easy enough to execute if one tells the border posts and airports that she is not allowed to leave the country.
“Gen Mothiba agreed to do so and therefore we welcome the announcement made by the Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, that all border posts and airports are now on high alert to ensure that she will not leave the country.
“However, it is worrisome that it may happen that she does not necessarily leave the country through the official border posts or airports, she may make use of a private jet or she may even be allowed to leave the country through Waterkloof.
“Should this happen, those who allowed it, must be charged with obstruction of justice.
“The minister must give us the assurance that they are doing everything in their power to prevent her from leaving the country and that they will ensure that she is held accountable for her behaviour in South Africa. South Africa is not another Zimbabwe, unless we allow it to happen,” says Dr Groenewald.
