The FF Plus asked for a comprehensive report to be submitted to the council of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) detailing how much money the Municipality has received from national government in the form of financial lifelines since 2018.
A government delegation consisting of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, paid an oversight visit to Emfuleni last Friday to check on the progress of the provincial and national governments’ intervention plan.
President Ramaphosa visited Emfuleni last year as well and promised to build 40 roads in the Municipality. Nothing came of it, though.
A further R1,1 billion was also promised to repair and upgrade the water system.
So far, only R260 million has been received.
The FF Plus wants to know where the rest of the money is and why the roads have not been built as promised.
In his speech, Lesufi advised Emfuleni to use its budget funds wisely, but the Municipality has had an unfunded budget for the last six years. The money coffers are empty.
Even though Lesufi tried to paint Emfuleni in a positive light, raw sewage is still flowing in the streets, rivers are being polluted and residents are increasingly affected by power outages.
Ramaphosa and Lesufi’s visit to Emfuleni was just another ANC government election gimmick of making promises that come to nothing.
Emfuleni residents are paying top dollar for services that they are not provided with.
Emfuleni deserves better than the ANC.
