Government is putting obstacles in the road to economic recovery instead of offering solutions

South Africa's economic recovery plan does not instil any confidence and the government is putting obstacles in the road to economic recovery instead of offering solutions.

Three of the four priorities for stimulating growth that President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) are actually obstacles. Only one truly addresses the recovery of the country's economy.

Today in Parliament, Minister Ebrahim Patel explained the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition's analysis of the SONA on the road to economic recovery.

The fight against Covid-19, the transformation of the economy by means of Affirmative Action (AA) and eradicating corruption all come at a premium while only the objective of speeding up economic growth and recovery is truly aimed at creating more job opportunities.

Cutting back on the Department's budget in real terms over the course of the next three years, with inflation taken into account, is a cause for concern and will not do enough to create a climate in which the country's economy can grow.

Without a radical change in perspective and adjusting its focus areas and expected outcomes, the Department will not achieve better results than it did in the past.
