Gomorrah settlement in Pretoria damages church, infrastructure over service delivery

The Gauteng government's empty promises once again resulted in unrest and violence yesterday.

More than 500 residents of the Gomorrah informal settlement in the west of Pretoria damaged the Wesmoot Dutch Reformed Church, vandalised infrastructure and prevented residents of the area from leaving their homes.

FF Plus MPL and member of the Gauteng Legislature's Community Safety Committee, Kobus Hoffman, FF Plus councillor and member of the Mayoral Committee on Community Safety in the Tshwane Metro Council, Grandi Theunissen, and FF Plus councillor, Morné Erasmus, spent the whole day trying to calm residents down.

Stones were thrown at both Hoffman and Theunissen while residents torched tyres in the streets.

The Gauteng provincial Police Commissioner, Lt.-Gen. Elias Mawela, was asked to send reinforcements from nearby areas to the hotspot.

Residents of Booysens, who live in the street adjacent to Gomorrah, were trapped in their homes and feared for their lives.

The FF Plus was present while the Public Order Policing unit brought women and children out of their homes to safety.

The party wants to see the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Lebogang Maile, pay a personal visit to Gomorrah so that he can explain to residents why the many promises of housing and services have not yet realised.

This once again proves that the ANC cannot be trusted. The people of Gauteng deserve better than the ANC.
