The Gauteng MEC for Finance, Lebogang Maile, tabled an ambitious budget amid a declining economic environment and projected shortfalls.
The budget’s objective of unlocking economic growth will not realise unless the provincial government succeeds in attracting substantial foreign investments to the province.
In turn, the prerequisite for attracting foreign investments is creating an investor-friendly environment, which can only happen if government implements comprehensive policy reforms on national level to phase out expensive and counterproductive policy, such as Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Affirmative Action (AA).
In this respect, Gauteng’s economic future is inextricably intertwined with the national government’s policy position.
It is, furthermore, important for national and provincial government to start normalising relations with the USA to benefit from the transactional basis on which President Trump will from now on establish or terminate trade ties with other countries.
The ANC will, however, have to bow the knee and take an absolutely neutral stance regarding Israel and Iran.
Another possible problem is that the MEC tabled the budget to the Legislature without any guarantee that the national budget will be adopted by Parliament.
Maile himself emphasised the significance of foreign investments. This is encouraging as it indicates that the ANC in Gauteng realises that the national and provincial governments’ international positioning is of the utmost importance for facilitating economic growth, which could turn the current downward trajectory around.
Maile also personally thanked the Freedom Front Plus, and Adv Anton Alberts by name, for attempting to attract international investments to Gauteng.
Also, the ANC in Gauteng knows all too well that the party’s future growth depends on providing large-scale employment to the unemployed masses without prospects nor hope who have turned their backs on the ANC.
Polls show that this trend is gaining momentum and that the ANC finds itself in even bigger trouble at the polls than with the 2024 national and provincial elections.
Only time will tell whether the ANC is willing to come to its senses and consider making drastic policy changes.
The Freedom Front Plus will seize this opportunity by tabling a plan to Maile proposing that at least one Special Economic Zone be declared free of BEE and AA allowing businesses to operate on the basis of market benefits and merit.
This Special Economic Zone’s future growth will serve as proof that the free market fares better than other areas in Gauteng.
The Freedom Front Plus is committed to doing whatever it takes to turn Gauteng’s economy around.
