Today, the FF Plus set out to find out more about the context of a video on social media showing an elderly man lying on the floor, bound to a pipe, in the Voortrekker Hospital in Potgietersrus (Mokopane).
The FF Plus paid a surprise visit to the hospital to determine first-hand what the context surrounding the incident is. Only the person's surname is known.
After the visit, the FF Plus is satisfied and feels that the senior staff of the hospital played open cards about the incident. It appears that the patient, who is very ill and confused, was brought to the hospital after he had fallen off his bed at home.
According to the hospital staff, they were afraid that he might injure himself even further if he were to fall off the bed again and, thus, his mattress was placed on the floor. He was temporarily tied with some tape to prevent him from crawling around and he was put back into bed later on when he had calmed down.
With the FF Plus's visit earlier today, the person in question was lying on a bed with clean linen. The FF Plus also visited other wards and found that the hospital was surprisingly clean and that the staff were helpful.
This hospital deserves special recognition as it is common knowledge that some state hospitals are in a terrible condition.
Elderly people who are sick are vulnerable and easy targets for abuse in hospitals and homes for the elderly. Such incidents come to light on a regular basis.
The most vulnerable members of our society, and even animals that are abused, are very close to the FF Plus's heart and the party will keep fighting to stop the abuse of humans and animals.
