The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) noted with concern that there has been an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at Karan Beef in Heidelberg.
Karan Beef is one of the town’s largest employers and contributors to the local economy.
Many local farmers, particularly small-scale farmers, supply livestock to Karan Beef as well.
Currently, there are 120 000 cattle at the feedlot – only 2% are infected with foot-and-mouth disease.
The producer announced on its Facebook page that it remains committed to transparency, and maintaining the highest standards of animal health and welfare. No new livestock will be purchased during the crisis.
The Freedom Front Plus has always held Karan Beef in high esteem for its immense contribution to the local economy and, in particular, its involvement in community projects to support the less privileged.
The party hopes that the crisis will be resolved swiftly for the sake of all the affected parties in Heidelberg.
