Dr Pieter Groenewald, leader of the FF Plus, is going to submit a private member’s bill that will propose certain amendments to the existing Firearms Control Act, which regulates the renewal of firearm licences.
After the controversy and uncertainty about the matter caused by the Constitutional Court’s ruling last week, there seems to be only one way to go about it and that is to amend the Act so that firearm owners have a fair opportunity to renew their licences even after the licenses have expired, without forfeiting their firearms.
The FF Plus will also consult with other interested parties, like the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association (SAHGCA), to make the necessary amendments to the
Act.
It remains unacceptable that firearm owners will forfeit their firearms due to a simple administrative error that can be rectified by paying a fine and renewing the licences.
If firearm owners are to forfeit their property in this way, they are being discriminated against, seeing as in the case of a motor vehicle licence, one simple pays a fine and does not lose the property right on your vehicle.
