The FF Plus in Gauteng welcomes the suspension of the former Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu, by the Global Banking School in Bedfordshire in England, says Philip van Staden, FF Plus MPL in Gauteng.
Mahlangu has been suspended from her studies at the institution due to her involvement in the Life Esidimeni tragedy earlier this year, which cost 141 psychiatric patients their lives due to contracts with psychiatric institutions that were terminated. Presently, arbitration hearings concerning the tragedy, where Mahlangu has to testify, are ongoing.
Van Staden says that Mahlangu may not get away with what she has done and she must be sent back to South Africa immediately. He adds that the FF Plus is of the opinion that Mahlangu’s passport must be confiscated and that the British authorities must deport her at once.
“It is disturbing that Mahlangu fled to England to further her studies after her actions caused the death of 141 people.
“From the outset, the FF Plus was worried that Mahlangu might flee. Fortunately, she has now been suspended from her studies and she has to appear at the arbitration hearing. If she does not show up again, the authorities on national level must step in and ensure that she returns to South Africa.
“The FF Plus is currently busy finalising charge-sheets against Mahlangu and the others that were responsible for this tragedy and as soon as the arbitration hearing is over, the FF Plus will submit its charge-sheets to the relevant authorities for prosecution,” says Van Staden.
