The FF Plus welcomes the decision of the Pretoria High Court that the suspension of the Head of the Hawks, Lt.-Gen. Anwa Dramat, as well as the new appointment of a new Head, Gen.-Maj. Benny Ntlemeza, was illegal, Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the FF Plus’ chief spokesperson on Police said.
The court reversed the steps taken by the minister and effectively reinstated him in his position in the Hawks.
Dr. Groenewald says it was clear that there had been political interference to get rid of Dramat because he the Hawks had been investigating high-profile people.
He says the decision is a victory for constitutional democracy as legislation of Parliament has been found to be invalid and it is now finding application in practice.
“The recent suspension of persons in the Hawks, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the National Prosecution Authority creates the impression that political interference of is aimed at preventing influential people from being prosecuted.
“Especially organised crime is being promoted with the suspension of officials in the different departments.
“Dramat is a person of high integrity who had fulfilled his duties with diligence and rigor and deserves to be acknowledged by the minister of police,” Dr. Groenewald said.
