FF Plus welcomes court order issued against Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality because of sewage pollution

The FF Plus welcomes the court order that the Mahikeng High Court issued against the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, which orders the Municipality to immediately take the necessary steps to put an end to the overflow of sewage to the Rosendal farm as well as into the Harts River and Blesbok stream in the vicinity of Vryburg.

The application was brought against the Municipality by the Department of Water and Sanitation after numerous interventions at the Municipality failed since 2015.

The fact that the Municipality has refused to comply with the orders of the national Department for so long only reinforces the impression that municipalities nationwide have absolutely no respect for the environment or the country's scarce water sources.

It also demonstrates the notion that they see themselves as beyond reproach and above the law.

Thus, it is urgent and imperative for the Department to resume its tests to determine whether municipalities' have "blue-drop" or "green-drop" status, to identify the culprit-municipalities and to expand the court order to include the other relevant municipalities as well.

The continued pollution of our water sources, brought about by mismanagement and the consequent failure of sewage infrastructure, will have devastating consequences for our country. It basically comes down to a form of sabotage.

The residents of all the municipalities in the North West, the Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga have had to suffer the detrimental effects of the pollution caused by the ANC-controlled municipalities for years now.

The FF Plus will approach the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, and request in writing that the court order must be expanded in apply to all municipalities nationwide.
