The FF Plus welcomes the appointment of Major General Nicholas Jacobus Gerber as head of Mpumalanga's directorate for priority crime investigation (the Hawks).
It is the first time since 2008 that a white police officer is appointed as the provincial leader of the Hawks in Mpumalanga. It is imperative that individuals from minority groups are considered for promotions and appointments.
Maj. Gen. Gerber is an experienced and seasoned member from the ranks of the police, and will bring about much-needed stability in the top structures of the Hawks.
The FF Plus has always been opposed to political appointments of individuals who do not have any police experience. Therefore, this appointment is a light at the end of a dark tunnel.
Maj. Gen. Gerber's first test will be to see whether he can appoint experienced and competent commanders, who are not subject to political servitude.
He is facing immense challenges when it comes to combating crime in the province. But he is equipped to handle it, and possesses the necessary skills and expertise.
The FF Plus will support him in his fight against crime in the province.
