The FF Plus welcomes the announcement made by Gauteng premier, David Makhura, earlier today that Paul Mashatile will not stay on as the province’s MEC for Local Government and Housing.
According to the premier, Mashatile is relieved of his duties as MEC so that he can focus all his attention on Lethuli House and the ANC’s national operations.
Over the past year, the FF Plus in Gauteng kept the pressure on the MEC due to the fact that he was not focused on doing his job as MEC. During the debate on the State of the Province Address yesterday, the FF Plus insisted that the premier must remove Mashatile from his office as MEC and that he should not be allowed to stay on until the end of March.
Mashatile spent a lot of time at Lethuli House and neglected his responsibilities towards the province.
Last year, the FF Plus also filed complaints about Mashatile and the illegal administration of the Mogale City Council with the Public Protector (PP).
The removal of Mashatile is a victory for the FF Plus. Hopefully, the premier will now appoint an MEC that has a passion for cleaning up local government, that will ensure proper service delivery for the residents of Gauteng and that will address the impending housing crisis in the province.
The premier had no choice but to discharge Mashatile. The FF Plus’s complaints about him made the premier realise that Mashatile’s divided attention will have disastrous consequences.
