FF Plus supports Mpumalanga tourism

The government's regulations regarding the restrictions on the tourism sector stand in stark contrast to the way in which the transport industry, like taxis and buses, is regulated. Immediate action must be taken to prevent great damage and even more job losses in the tourism industry.

Thus, the FF Plus supports the local tourism stakeholders' march to the provincial Legislature of Mpumalanga and the party is calling on the MEC for Safety, Security and Tourism, Cynthia Tshabalala, to heed the Mpumalanga tourism sector's cry for help.

Tourism contributes 4,2% to job creation in the Mpumalanga province. Nationally, the industry is suffering losses of up to R750 million per day and 1,5 million job opportunities are in jeopardy.

The FF Plus will engage with Tshabalala to get answers on what impact the lockdown has had in the sector. The FF Plus posed questions in this regard to the Department in May already.

The biggest question is why minibus-taxis are allowed to operate at a 100% passenger capacity, but tour-guide vehicles are not allowed to operate at all.

It is irrational not to allow tours; tour operators will be responsible and ensure that the necessary health and safety measures are complied with.

The FF Plus will also insist that the MEC must examine the Covid-19 safety protocols that were compiled by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA).

The FF Plus is of the opinion that these protocols are much better than those currently being used in the taxi industry and yet the taxi industry enjoys preference. (Attached find a copy of the said protocols).
