FF Plus requests Limpopo’s road agency to mitigate sinkhole on R71

In response to an urgent request by the FF Plus, Limpopo’s Road Agency (RAL) saw to it that a sinkhole that was busy forming on the R71 bridgeway in the direction of Gravelotte and Phalaborwa was mitigated.

The R71 is one of the area’s main routes and carries a lot of traffic every day.

The RAL manned a stop-and-go sign during the night to warn motorists of the sinkhole in the road. The sinkhole was also cordoned off with the relevant safety equipment.

The sinkhole started forming after the area had received good rainfall since November 2022. Water collected below the tar and due to the pressure of the traffic a hole started forming.

According to the RAL, the R71 is SANRAL’s responsibility and engineers will visit the site this morning with the aim of starting repairs soon.

Meanwhile, motorists are encouraged to drive safely and to rather make use of alternative routes.

Motorists are also welcome to contact the following FF Plus councillors to obtain information regarding alternative routes, and to stay up to date with how the repair work is coming along.

Contact Pieter Gerber in Hoedspruit on 072 298 5467, André Moss in Tzaneen on 066 238 1347, and Giel van Niekerk in Phalaborwa on 083 749 1998.
