FF Plus requests investigation into R206 million earmarked for footbridge in Ekurhuleni which was never built

The FF Plus insists that an investigation be launched into a project for a footbridge in the Ekurhuleni Metro which was never built.

In a report that was tabled to the Metro’s Transport, Roads and Storm Water Committee, the Department of Transport, Roads and Storm Water claims that a footbridge was constructed between Zonkezizwe and Palmridge for an amount of R206 million. A final certificate of completion is included in the report.

However, the Committee, on which the FF Plus serves, discovered during an unannounced oversight visit to the footbridge that it was never built. Nothing but a road approach sign had been erected where the footbridge was supposed to be built.

The Committee also found additional irregularities. Of the R206 million earmarked for the project, the Department could only account for R14,4 million. The outstanding amount of R191,6 million could not be explained.

The FF Plus insists that the Metro’s Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) thoroughly investigates the matter and submits quarterly reports to the Council detailing the investigation’s progress.

This lack of transparency and accuracy in the Department’s reporting not only undermines the Department’s credibility, but also raises serious questions regarding oversight over public funds.

The FF Plus will keep pushing for transparency and accountability to ensure that public funds are used effectively and fairly to benefit all Ekurhuleni residents.
