FF Plus requests investigation into allegations of intimidation against Mpumalanga MEC

The FF Plus has requested the Mpumalanga Legislature’s Ethics Committee to investigate allegations of intimidation made by a member of the public against the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Mandla Msibi.

The claim must be thoroughly investigated and, if necessary, appropriate steps must be taken.

The police confirmed this week that one Mr Skhumbuzo Nkosi filed a complaint at the Pienaar Police Station following a road rage incident in July, during which persons with ties to the MEC allegedly assaulted him and pointed a firearm at him.

Mr Nkosi alleges that Mr Msibi phoned him after the incident, questioned him and threatened him concerning the charge. A recording of this conversation was reportedly submitted to the police.

This is not the first time that the MEC is implicated in serious accusations. Msibi was charged with double homicide in August 2021 after an incident in Mbombela. The murder charge was withdrawn last year due to a lack of evidence.

In 2019, he stood trial on charges of, among other things, violent assault, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and robbery. He was acquitted of these charges.

The FF Plus demands that the latest charge of intimidation should not only be investigated by the police, but also by the Legislature’s Ethics Committee.
