Today during a session of the National Assembly, the FF Plus requested a parliamentary debate on the effect of the national minimum wage on small enterprises.
South Africa is in the midst of a serious unemployment crisis with an unemployment rate of 29%, the highest in 16 years. The expanded unemployment rate is 38%. That is one of the highest in the world.
Small and medium enterprises are some of the biggest creators of jobs and yet nearly 80% of new small enterprises fail within the first year. Restrictive labour and other legislation contribute to the high failure
rate.
The FF Plus agrees with some of the proposals put forward in the strategy document of the Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, and is of the opinion that legislation must be relaxed for small enterprises.
It is of the utmost importance that the Department of Labour's extended mandate to promote job creation is prioritised.
Small and medium enterprises must be enabled to contribute meaningfully to the economy. Addressing the country's problems may not be pushed aside for the sake of the ANC or its allies, like Cosatu.
