Yesterday in a council meeting of the Rand West City Local Municipality (Randfontein, Westonaria), the FF Plus voted against a proposal to increase the salary offered to the new chief financial officer.
The new chief financial officer, Mr Gareth Mnisi, was not satisfied with the initial offer of R1 055 459 and the Mayor, Gladys Khosa, proposed that the offer should be increased to R1 427 459.
In response, the FF Plus proposed that the council decision of 3 August must be adhered to and that the same offer, with the same conditions, must be made to the second candidate, Thinavhuyo Mpye.
The council decision determined that three candidates will be placed on the short list for the position of chief financial officer with a salary of R1 055 459, as advertised, with Mnisi being the first candidate.
And if he does not accept the offer, the same offer must be made to the second candidate.
Mnisi rejected the offer, and the Mayor wanted to offer him a higher salary package of R1 427 459, instead of making the initial offer to the second candidate.
The FF Plus’s proposal went to a vote and 33 councillors voted against the party’s proposal while 26 supported it.
In the previous council meeting, the FF Plus also used its vote to oppose a salary increase of R421 100 per annum for the newly appointed municipal manager, Thabo Collin Ndlovu. However, the majority of councillors supported the proposal to increase his salary.
Ndlovu is currently paid an annual salary of R1 698 573.
The Rand West City Municipality is under financial pressure and is unable to pay its creditors.
Its outstanding debt to Eskom alone already amounts to R840 million.
This once again serves as proof of the ANC-controlled council's misguided priorities, and its utter disregard for residents' right to proper service delivery.
Officials earn inflated salaries, but residents must be satisfied with no improvement in their circumstances.
Rand West City deserves better than the ANC.
